Will you get the swine flu vaccination? (originally posted 9/18/09, updated 10/2/09)

On the one hand, I've read that one of the vaccine's supposed ingredients, squalene (an element added to stimulate the immune response), may have been responsible for Gulf War Syndrome.  And there is worry of Guillain-Barre syndrome, a serious neurological disease that was associated with the swine flu immunization of 1976.

On the other hand, my children's pediatrician says the H1N1 vaccine is not much different from our annual flu vaccines (only the flu strain addressed by the vaccine is different) and we shouldn't be afraid of it.  And it will be available in a preservative-free formulation, which is the only one her office will carry.

At the risk of attracting the ire of anti-vaccine activists, I'll state that I've had my children vaccinated as scheduled (though I always requested and received the preservative-free formulation), including their annual flu shots.

I'm on the fence on this one, though.  Can someone help me untangle this debate?

Update 10/2/09:
NOT getting it.

Nope. We don't get the annual either. I haven't read that the H1N1 vaccine will be available without Thimerosal. The annual vaccine is not available from our doc without Thimerosal (he gets all of his vaccines from the hospital system of which he is a part so buys in bulk - to get the annual flu vaccine without preservatives it must be bought in single vile packages).

The cost/benefit analysis weighs against the H1N1 vaccine for our family. Too little testing, too hurriedly invented, weighed against good health, hygiene, and access to health care.

I asked my doctor if there was mercury in a shot she wanted to give me. She said no and so I asked, "could you double check, please, can you just check to be sure?" She did and sure enough there was mercury in the shot. I declined the shot. Point is, people should be cautious about the fact that sometimes doctors don't know or care what else may be in the shot.

Still undecided here in Potomac. When I get a chance I am going to look at this link closely.

No way. If you did deep enough there is so much more to this shot than just the usual toxins that are put into vaccinations. The company that is producing most of it was exposed last year of sending vaccinations to countries 'accidentally tainted by bird flu'. The 'swine flu vaccine' was patented before the 'swine flu' propagandized epidemic.

Beware, there is an article in this weekends Long Island Newsday about the Health Care Workers being required by the State to get both the seasonal and H1N1 vaccines or lose their jobs. There's another state that is administering them to the children in a public school. I propose that it's quite possible that there will be no choice in this matter.

NO!!! My husband is actually in the medical field and they are being FORCED to get the H1N1 vaccine. That enrages me.

I'm not okay with any meds you don't really need. And H1N1 doesn't seem to be anything different than the flu and you may or may not end up getting it anyway. I don't think it's worth the risk.

But who knows? I may get H1N1 and die. ;) but probably not. So far we are fighting the forcing, but it's hard to fight losing your job and only source of income.

Up here in Canada, the federal government just gave the okay for physicans and health departments to start giving the H1N1 shots but my family is NOT getting it. We normally do not get the regular influenza shot so why get this one. Besides I do not like the fact that this vaccine has not been given the long term and short term testing it should have.

I do not want to give myself and my family something that may potentially hurt is. Yes, there are side effects with all vaccines but most of the other ones out there have science behind them in the studies.

I too do not like the idea of mercury in vaccines. Here in Canada all childhood vaccines are free of mercury except the flu shot and hepatitis (if I remember correctly)

Both of my girls have their immunizations up to date and will get shots when called for, except for the flu and H1N1. I am still on the fence about Gardasil, but i have a long time to mull over that one as my oldest is only 3!

Also, the other reason we dont get the flu shot is, other than the normal cold virus my family (husband, kids and me) do not get sick with the flu or other serious illness. Even my oldest who was a preemie born at 30 weeks has been very healthy (other than ear infections as a child). I would rather my kids be able to fight off colds and flu with their own strong immune system then pump them with something i know nothing about.
